As many of you may know from either purchasing an ebook or perusing a publisher's website that sells ebooks, the sheer number of electronic books for sale is staggering. How do you decide which book to buy from so many titles? Well, every month I plan to spotlight an ebook here at dowse, which will hopefully make your decision a little easier next time you are looking for an enjoyable, inexpensive read. For this month's ebook spotlight I picked 'Dreams of Darkness' by Elizabeth Burton. The language in this book is beautiful, lucid and keeps the reader totally absorbed with every nuance and detail. It's a story about evil verses good, and the courage which resides in all of us. Dreams of Darkness is available at RFL West. Bonnie Mercure Dreams
of Darkness Randrik alt Harbinnen likes being responsible for no one but himself. He has his pick of women, a talent for music that pays the bills and a hefty share of magical ability that gives him an unbeatable edge. Perian, an Adept of the Temple of Light, is also content. She has found a safe place where she can study and use her healing abilities without fear of the bigotry that her Drevnya race inspires. Three thousand years ago, their ancestors cast Azdrefel the Souleater into The Everdark to stop him from destroying the world he had created. Now, Azdrefel is free once more, and he knows only one way to remain free. He must inhabit the body of a human child at the moment of birth, adapting it and changing it into a vessel from which he is free to rule, feeding forever on his creation. He has decided that Perian will be the mother of that child. Only two people can stop him: Randrik and Perian. But how do you stop a god? EXCERPTS FROM REVIEWS OF DREAMS OF DARKNESS... "...this story displays the staying power of J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings." Nancy B. Leake for Sime~Gen "This is a romance, yes, but it's not like most of the "Fantasy Romance" novels you have seen lately. This one has good, solid, meaningful worldbuilding behind it. This one is a firm platform which can support a very long series of very long novels." Jacqueline Lichtenburg, author of Book of the First Lifewave and The Dushau Trilogy VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED "This is a warning. If you want to be waiting impatiently for Elizabeth Burton's next book, read Dreams of Darkness. Book 1 is so absorbing, you'll be sending her emails asking about Book 2 before you're finished." Susan McDonough Sanchez for Millenium SF&F EXCERPT FROM DREAMS OF DARKNESS. . . Perian drifted on the dark, lost in silence so vast it engulfed all but the tiny spark of her being. She strained to hear,to see, to feel anything that might anchor her, but met only the unending stillness. Beloved The word echoed in her mind. Who are you? That which survives. I am free once again, beloved, and I await your coming. You are my betrothed, my bride--she who will be Great Mother of a new world. The voice was sweet, warm, and yet it frightened her. Under the honey and the heat she sensed a coldness, a frigid evil crawling with perverse hunger. No! You lie! The laughter started softly, a mere whisper. Then, instant by instant, it grew louder, until the dark oblivian that held her shuddered with the noise. She screamed, though she had no voice, and struggled to be free, though she had no body. The void held her fast, indifferent to her terror--or feeding on it-- until she trembled on the brink of madness.Available
