50 Fantastic Musicals

It could be argued
that by definition all musicals are wholly fantastic because, as a rule,
people don't normally break into song while walking down the street, or
whatever, and even if they did it's doubtful that bystanders would join
in the chorus and form a spontaneous dance troupe.
However, for the purposes of this list, let's assume that a truly fantastic
musical is one which has a certain fantasy element, apart from its soundtrack.
Hollywood's first feature-length talkie was a musical of sorts,
and although the form hit its peak during the 1940s and early 1950s, musicals
have endured the vagaries of film fashion longer than any other movie
genre. I cannot vouch for the quality of all these films (some are pretty
dire!), so proceed with caution even if you're a diehard fan.
