After Midnight

A girl student is having nightmarea about a new psychology teacher, and is reluctant
to attend his classes. Foolishly, she does go, and the teacher gives a leason in the
"psychology of fear", using such diverse methods as pretending to blow his brains out
with a pistol, in order to get his message across. This is simply the beginning of
the film, and marks an explosive and shocking start which grabs your attention
immediately. The teacher obviously gets a severe ticking off for his methods, and so
decides to continue the fear leasons at his house, where a handful of pupils take up
his offer to tell stories intended to scare the group witless.
The first tale is told by the teacher, and could believeably do this as it's
quite well acted by its own cast. The atory unfolds visually, as teach begins to tell
it, Dead Of Night style. The second tale, however, is a slab of severe non-existence,
and the third is utterly predictable - and has been executed to greater effect in
many other films.
After Midnight is saved by the main plot of the girl who has sn uneasy feeling
about it all, and the finale, with its axe-wielding student. The direction by Jim and
Ken Wheat, maintains quite a steady pace throughout and on numerous occaesions makes
the film look very impressive. It all turns out to be nothing more than a Dead Of
Night carbon copy in the end - but sparkling effects and camerawork, and good
acting abound. Watch out for the Wheats in future, as if they get a really good
script, they could have a hit.
