The Ambulance

Having destroyed the mythical status of police as heroes in his Maniac Cop
films, independant filmmaker Larry Cohen wrecks the respectability of the paramedic
service with this 'Burke and Hare' update.
Marvel Comics artist, Joshua (Mask's Eric Stoltz), spies his dreamgirl on the
New York streets one day but, while chatting her up, Cheryl (Janine Turner) collapses
and is taken away by ambulance. The mystery is that she never arrived at the hospital
- any hospital. Cop James Earl Jones turns in another of his increasingly eccentric
performances as the unsympathetic-at-first detective, while ageing newshound Elias
(Red Buttons) isn't too sure about Josh either - but he smells a story, so offers to
help. Comics publisher Stan Lee is amongst the supporting cast (as is Cohen regular
Laurene Landon), but it's policewoman Sandra (Megan Gallagher) who provides determined
Joshua with the information required to track down the evil doctor (Eric Braeden, of
The Forbin Project) who's using kidnapped Manhattanites in the illegal research
he's doing on diabetics. Much intensely urban paranoia is economically generated by
the witty script, a typically-engaging bunch of offbeat characters, and an incredible
scenario - convincingly presented. In the wake of Ron Howard's Backdraft, the
New York fire brigade had better watch out - they may be next.
