Arachnophobia
110 minutes (PG) 1990
review by Stacy Bacon

It's certificate aside, this is a competent first feature by director Frank Marshall, whose previous claim to fame has been co-producing Spielberg efforts such as E.T. and Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
A team of explorers led by spider apecialiat Dr Atherton (atarchly played by Julian Sands, of Warlock), head into the Venezulan basin to find some new species - when they happen upon some very strange spiders. Unwittingly returning to base camp with one, a team member is killed and the spider stows away in his coffin - to be carried back to the victim's hometown where it creates a whole new breed of killer spider.
The principals include Jeff Daniels as the new town Doc, and John Goodman playing a slobby exterminator. The opening shots are tremendous, while the script deals out much humour. A (PG) means don't expect a monster masterpiece or gore extravaganza, as this is quite restrained. However, the final battle scene with a 'general' spider and his queen is suspenseful but with a light sense of the ridiculous and parody.
Hardly the film of 1991, but it's a pity it flopped in the US because no-one understood the title! Anyway, if you happen to be scared of spiders, go and see this - it's good therapy.
