DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
Big screen spin-offs of old TV series are rarely successful. None
of the recent batch of such adaptations (The Saint, Mission Impossible,
Lost In Space) made the grade, and this accessible but bland offering is no
exception. British secret agents John Steed (Ralph Fiennes) and Emma Peel (Uma
Thurman) defend the world against Sean Connery's megalomaniac weatherman, and
millions are lavished on attempts to replace the wit and charm of the original
cross-genre show with Twister quality visual effects and scenes of
Independence Day style mass destruction. Top thug Eddie Izzard has a fitting
demise, you get two Emma Peels in leather cat-suits for the price of one and, of the
technical work, probably the best that I can say is that the giant mechanical killer
bees are excellent. Watch out for the late Patrick Macnee - well, his voice, anyway
- as the forgotten agent 'Invisible Jones' in the Ministry's basement office! Tony Lee
