DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
Glaswegian hairdresser Crawford Mackenzie (Craig Ferguson) is
invited to the World Freestyle Hairdressing Championship in Los Angeles. He assumes
he is to compete, but on arrival he finds out he is only there as a spectator.
Crawford is determined to take part in the competition, but first he has to become
a member of the Hairdressers of America guild to qualify. The Big Tease is
told mockumentary style, as a film crew led by Martin Samuels (Chris Langham) follows
Crawford around everywhere. The American setting is a blatant attempt to attract an
international audience, but it simply becomes an excuse for obvious jokes. (Hotel
Receptionist: "Where are you from?" Crawford: "Glasgow." Receptionist: "I love the
Beatles.") Nice as it is to see a gay lead character in a major-studio release, one
problem is that Crawford, self-described as a cross between Liberace and Braveheart,
is a stand-up or sitcom character whose flimsiness is exposed by the demands of a
feature film. And, not an especially funny one at that. Gary Couzens
