DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
In its own way, this belated addition to the Child's Play
series is just as clever an exploration of horror genre motifs as the Scream
trilogy is of slasher movies. Sinister voodoo spells are much in evidence, of course,
as an old flame of the original film's deceased serial killer resurrects Chucky's
lost soul into the battered remains of the 'Good Guy' doll. The juicy script by
Child's Play creator Don Mancini pokes fun at the trashy conventions of
murder-by-monster movies, while elevating this particular series to heights few would
have imagined. As the local police chief, John Ritter dies horribly with nails in his
head, while Jennifer Tilly gets turned into Chucky's bride, as James Whale's classic
Bride Of Frankenstein plays on the TV set thrown into her bathtub, and there
are several gruesome slayings - not all of them perpetrated by Chucky either, it must
be said. The humour is sick and twisted, the special effects are exemplary and, like
the 'Elm Street' saga, this franchise has received a very welcome and imaginative
revival. Tony Lee
