DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
Cheerlessly low budget and hopelessly derivative caper drama,
very much in the blood and thunder mode of 1970s gangster pictures, this casino heist
thriller seems to have been inspired by The Usual Suspects. Four men of widely
different backgrounds meet in a bar and, being short of cash, plan a robbery based on
a tip that the security of their chosen target is weak. In fact, the gambling house
our antiheroes rob is actually run by a particularly nasty Triad boss, who sends his
merciless henchmen after the sneaky thieves. The murders here are cruel in the
extreme, and the snarling mobsters think less than nothing of shooting an unarmed
woman in front of her boyfriend. Don't hold your breath for a happy ending, either.
Moody guerrilla filmmaking techniques lend a grimly existential air to the
proceedings, so expect any character you care about to be shot down like a stray dog
outside a seedy Bangkok restaurant. Pleasant, this is not. Steven Hampton
