DOWSE Guide to the
Movies With the film doing the rounds again, and its slow burn of legend and controversy, there's no doubt that this cd will do quite nicely thank you. Bear in mind, though, that the majority of the music is classical with music from the likes of Purcell, Rossini, Beethoven, Elgar, with other work by Terry Tucker, Erika Elgen, and the concluding piece is none other than 'Singing In The Rain'! You have to rely purely on images to convey the relevant pieces and their purpose. If you haven't seen the film, then yes, you'll have an album of some 'nice' music, but the whole purpose of (at least two) of the pieces is the context in which they're played. In some respects, and quite aside from the film, one of the composers, William Carlos, was a main pioneer with the early synthesiser. His album, 'Switched On Bach', and 'The Well Tempered Synthesiser', did quite well and established the instrument. Carlos wrote the theme tune for this film, so there you go - a bit of a history lesson as well. review by Dave W. Hughes
