An unusual serial killer thriller with a keen, satirical edge, based on the novel by
Iain M. Banks (which I've not read), Complicity examines and then damns the
legacy of Thatcherism and the socio-political impact of Majorite policies, and 'New
Labour' rhetoric, by means of underdog news journalism that exposes corruption, leading
- as if quite naturally - from character assassination to actual murder.
Jonny Lee Miller plays the serious reporter intent on revealing the truth of
fat cats and crooked officials, who finds that his tabloid victims are being dealt
with more ruthlessly than he would dare, even before he's filed his stories. The
police task force (led by Brian Cox, cementing the 'Hannibal' link) charge him as
their prime suspect but the truth goes much deeper than that, exploring a shocking
instance of betrayal in the newsman's past, revealing the killer's identity in a
truly gripping finale. To say more would spoil the effect of this surprisingly well
crafted mystery.
