Dead Man's Curve

87 minutes (15) Tartan
Director: Dan Rosen
review by Tony Lee

Life is hard and death is easy at American colleges in this film's twisted, black comedy world. If your unpopular room-mate commits suicide, a rarely invoked charter means you get free entry to Harvard and avoid all that needless grief, depression and survivor's guilt. Mathew Lillard (from Scream) is guilty as sin. Did he really push his friend off a cliff just to up his grades? Is anyone in this intriguing thriller from first-time director Dan Rosen telling the truth?
This is one of those annoying teen-appeal movies where the rock music on the soundtrack is clearly intended to be of equal, if not more, importance to all concerned than the script or the storytelling. It's enjoyable enough, and actress Dana Delany is good as the shrink who can't give up smoking but, unfortunately, Dead Man's Curve is still not a patch on Michael Lehmann's classic Heathers.
