The Deep End Of The Ocean

104 minutes (12)
Director: Ulu Grosbard
review by Gary Couzens

Beth Cappadora (Michelle Pfeiffer) takes her three children along with her to a high school reunion but one of them, Ben, disappears and is never found. Nine years later, Beth and her husband Pat (Treat Williams) move to Chicago. A boy called Sam comes round to mow their lawn and Beth is convinced he's Ben...
Based on a novel by Jacquelyn Mitchard, The Deep End Of The Ocean is very much an acting vehicle, but a rather contrived one. The whole plot rests on a huge coincidence that the film negotiates rather awkwardly. Ulu Grosbard is a rather styleless stage and screen director whose strength has always been with actors and especially actresses. His last film, Georgia, with Jennifer Jason Leigh and an Oscar-nominated Mare Winningham, was never released in the UK; this new one is an old-fashioned, solid and occasionally stolid acting vehicle for its star. As such it works reasonably well, though it's not as moving as it should be.
