DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
It's 1978 and four high school students have tickets to see
'Kiss' live. Unfortunately one of their mothers burns the tickets as she is convinced
Kiss are in league with the Devil. So how do they get to see their favourite band?
Plenty of misadventures ensue on the way to Detroit. Unusual in its period setting -
which unlike Boogie Nights isn't dwelled upon - Detroit Rock City is at
heart just another teen movie, with the pursuit of sex secondary to that of rock and
roll. But there's obvious affection here from writer and director Adam Rifkin, even
if some of the characters (notably the Bible-bashing mother) veer all the way into
caricature. But he gets good performances out of his young cast, most of who aren't
too familiar, apart from Edward Furlong and, noteworthy in a small part, Natasha
Lyonne. There's plenty of contemporary rock music on the soundtrack, not all of it
by Kiss, who appear in person at the end. Detroit Rock City is fast,
disposable, entertaining and very, very loud. Gary Couzens
