DOWSE Guide to the
Movies John Carpenter has, over the past 25 years, made a number of excellent films, including the original Halloween, The Thing and of course Escape From New York. He also made the recent Escape From L.A. which is basically the same as EFNY - how did he get away with that? It may surprise you (or not) that JC also wrote, composed and performed the music on many of these same films. The sound is big on synths and can be heard in the film Assault On Precinct 13 (1976) - around about the time that synth music, still somewhat of a novelty, was being thrust into the limelight by the likes of Jean-Micheal Jarre. Carpenter's music certainly helps set the tone for many of his films, being dark and broody and has a touch of the Ennio Morricone about it. At times all that can be heard is a rhythmic bass thump-thump, very much like a heartbeat - just before the action hots up and scares the shite out of ya (see The Thing)! So what we have here on this CD is all the music from the film plus many classic snippets of dialogue ("I heard you were dead"). Also included is over 20 minutes of previously unreleased music plus music scenes deleted from the final print. Pretty good sleeve notes also provide details of how and why things ended up as they are, music-wise. Overall it's actually a good CD and certainly if you enjoyed the film then this is one for you. review by Liam Murphy
