Sharon Stone has the title role in this remake of John Cassavetes' gangsterama. She
struts about town in various designer frocks after getting out of prison, and isn't
happy to learn her onetime boyfriend has no intention of handing over the money he
promised her. When Gloria finds out the crooks are holding a young boy, having
ruthlessly killed his parents, she picks up a gun and it's hell hath no fury time.
Twenty years on, the mafia accounts book of Cassavetes' melodrama has
become a floppy disk, and the black comedy element is more pronounced, but essentially
this is the same story. Stone's brassy moll is great to watch here, whether she's
robbing thieves, berating the six-year-old kid (a fine performance by Jean-Luke
Figueroa) for not already knowing that life is unfair, dropping in to see old pals
like Bonnie Bedelia, Cathy Moriarty, and the late George C. Scott, or just plain old
freaking out in frustration at her run of bad luck. Thankfully, scenes with Stone and
the young boy are touching but never soppy, and funny without being dumb. If you like
old fashioned chase thrillers with a keen sense of humour buy this.
