DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
This album is for all fans of Alfred Hitchcock's thrillers, and the admirers of
composer Bernard Herrmann. Together these two giants of the cinema fused
sound and vision into a strong force - long before Spielberg similarly
teamed up with John Williams. This new CD, performed by the City of Prague
Philharmonic and conducted by Paul Bateman, brings together excerpts from
some of Herrmann's most potent film scores: Vertigo, North By Northwest,
The Trouble With Harry, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Marnie, Torn
Curtain and the infamous Psycho - and yes, the screeching violins of the shower
sequence are here! As you expect from Silva Screen Records the recording quality is
excellent, and having used the original Herrmann arrangements this is the
way the music was intended to be heard. An impressive album. review by John M. Peters
