Killer Instinct

Director: David Michael Latt
92 minutes (15) Xscapade
review by Steven Hampton

With Reservoir Dogs and Nikita both cited as examples of the movie milieu being explored or, at least, revisited here, we should rightly expect big things of this hardcore but rather tawdry robbery, revenge and murder thriller. And, sure enough, director David Michael Latt does a creditable emulation of Fincher's enigmatic Se7en (sans the star performances), and stylistically mimics the jagged cutting, harsh lighting and grimly violent rattrap context of Tetsuo. Much loud screaming and vivid arterial spray ensues in cold dark rooms, as the cast of unknowns sort out their mutual animosities with guns, knives and a warehouse full of blunt instruments. An unhappy and unpleasant ending goes without saying. Patience is essential, and some dutiful (filling-in-the-plot-holes) self-assembly required.
