King Cobra

Director: David and Scott Hillenbrand
89 minutes (15) High Fliers
review by Carl Meewezen

Unashamedly naff monster movie about a giant mutant snake terrorising a small town during the annual beer fest. Good cast of character actors include Pat Morita, Hoyt Axton and Courtney Gains struggle physically, humourlessly, even fearfully with the Chiodo brothers' (remember Killer Klowns From Outer Space?) fascinatingly awful mechanical effects. It's thirty feet long with venomous fangs as big as tusks, and an aggressive demeanour to match. King Cobra plays out like a belated Jaws spoof and wins this month's VideoVista award for silliest climax: watch in perplexed awe as the allegedly smart reptile slithers into an obvious trap. One question has vexed the VideoVista biology dept: how often does a snake shed it skin, anyway? This creature leaves its overcoat behind every day! The only good news is that the unintentional jokes are better than the scripted ones.
