Kiss: The Second Coming
133 minutes (15) Aviva International DVD Region 2
review by Tony Lee
This documentary looks at the epic world tour that followed a reunion of the four
original members of Kiss. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley welcome back Ace Trehley and
Peter Criss, to put on their characteristic makeup and costumes, and revive the
infamous 1970s shock rock circus.
The New York band that used to open for Blue Oyster Cult became one of the
greatest US live acts, reformed after 17 years for a special MTV unplugged show, before
taking their spectacular, stadium filling antics on the road from Madison Square
Gardens to Castle Donington, under the Brooklyn bridge, across Europe, and down to
Japan. Wonder at the gender and genre meanings of platform boots, sparkly spandex, and
black and white warpaint. Be amazed by levitating drums, smoking guitars, bass solos,
musicians' flying stunts, set-piece press conferences and fireworks made fashionable
again. Naked ladies at the photo shoot ensure this release gets a 15 certificate, the
wrinkly rockers' horrendous plastic sincerity tries your patience at times and yet,
there's an undeniable energy and flair for stage dramatics about this band few of their
contemporaries ever had, then or now.
DVD extras: scene access in 30 chapters, discography, four-language
subtitles, and choice of Dolby audio. Supplementary material comprises three songs
from the tour: 'Shout It Out Loud', 'Shandi', and 'Detroit Rock City'.
