DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
Though I have at times thought 'world cinema' to be a euphemism for acute boredom, Jean
Becker's Children Of The Marshland exudes an irresistible folksy 1930s period
charm as French rustics and their city chums work, drink wine, talk (but not about the
great war!), drink some more wine, play with their children, eat, drink more wine. Yes,
the boozing is regrettably overdone. Eric Cantona is quite alarmingly convincing as a
loudmouthed boxer who plots his revenge on one of the boozy friends from his jail cell.
The acting's excellent; the pace is steady and not too leisurely, while the direction
and cinematography are flawless. One point: You will need a large widescreen TV for
this video because the English subtitles (part of the film, not added for video) are so
tiny. Rob Marshall
