DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
Admirable updating of the old US TV cop show, this crime thriller has a young cast led
by Clare Danes, a formulaic but not entirely unconvincing plot, and a neat line in
character-driven humour. Three small time convicts are offered a chance to redeem their
wasted lives by going undercover as, well, themselves, in a nightclub to root out a
prostitution racket. Dennis Farina appears, all-too-briefly, as the trio's mentor.
There's a fat gangster who says: "I'm not a fag, I just like to dance," and
lets the black hero lead. Watch out for the crooked cops that stole a cache of drugs
from the police evidence locker, and are trying to sell it to another bunch of crooks
- without badges. The writers know this material is cliché ridden and make full
use of our familiarity with such cops-and-robbers drama, delivering some witty dialogue
("it looks a hell of a lot like an abandoned warehouse"), and situational
riffs borrowed from Charlie's Angels and Starsky & Hutch. Well worth
checking out as a midweek rental! Jeff Young
