DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
Like Time Regained this British movie is based on a work of verse, but it's
adapted from Pushkin, not Proust, and isn't really half as worthwhile. The film
boasts stunning photography capturing beautiful but austere Russian landscapes and
period detail - the highly praised ice-skating sequence is admittedly quite
astonishing to look at, yet the actual plot is sadly rather dull. Not being a truly
romantic drama, as the main characters don't end up together, Onegin lacks an
essential point of interest for those unfamiliar with the literary source (like me).
What's left is the archly observed tragedy of it all, and first class performances
from the likes of Ralph Fiennes (whose sister directs) as the title character,
supported by Toby Stephens, Lena Headey, Liv Tyler (so out of place in Armageddon,
but perfectly cast here as the elegantly sober Tatyana), and an uncredited Francesca
Annis. As an antidote to Hollywood's vacuous romantic comedies and explicit modern
love stories, Onegin serves up plenty of maturity, though the expected depth
of feeling has been replaced by a sense of heaviness and uninspired piety. Rob Marshall
