Remember that song 'Torn Between Two Lovers', the 1977 song by one Mary McGregor? Well that is what it's like being a mathematical genius suffering from serious epileptic episodes. The Wall Street suits want you to rewrite their hardware and give them the economic advantage. The Hasidic cabalistic sect want you to decode their scriptures and give them the spiritual advantage.
   What is a haunted genius to do? Create the ultimate computer monster or reveal the true face of the Beast?
   Sean Gullette is superb as Maximillian Cohen, a man who lives inside a supercomputer run by ants. Really, that is what it is like, a biomechanical symbiosis worthy of Giger himself. Man, machine and insect calcing out the midnight oil. Billed as a sci-fi/thriller, it is just plain weird, a bashed together MTV festival for the senses. You are never sure if Maximillian's mind will rip under the stress and strain of pattern recognition. Dwarfed by the sheer scale of the numerical universe. A sinister, paranoid, edgy movie chock full of eerie sounds from Aphex Twin, Orbital and the likes.
   People have writted theses on the content, motivation and religious and scientific metphors of Pi, the best independant movie since Eraserhead.
