Michael Nyman - Virgin Venture CDVE 919
Soundtrack music from the master of the, ahem, soundtracks! Bit more listenable than
some of his earlier scores. Stuff I've heard before tended to be more minimalist than
this, and as you'll be no doubt aware, this either works or it doesn't, as well as
being very personal.
Very morose and sad in parts, I can well imagine that much of the music
has captured the scenes and images very well, especially the early morning dew doffed
and misty shore scenes. Many of the titles give little away: Big My Secret, I Clipped
Your Wing and Little Impulse, whilst others may well offer some form of vision to help:
Deep Into The Forest, To The Edge Of The Earth and The Sacrifice.
It goes without saying that the featured instrument is the piano, but on
the biggest majority it's backed by the Munich Philly. The main attraction, however,
is that the main man himself plays the piano.
As I've often said with soundtracks, their biggest strength lies in the
fact that they need to be self-supportive and not just be, literally, a soundtrack, if
you know what I mean. As has always been the case, though, with Nyman, he manages to
get over this problem.
