DOWSE movie guide review of Pleasantville

Pleasantville
Director: Gary Ross 120 minutes (12) EV
review by Ian Shutter

Well produced, but unadventurous, comedy drama about two kids magically transported into a b/w TV soap. Once there, and trapped in roles as comparatively naïve, supposedly innocent 1950s teenagers, our 1990s heroes inevitably change the placid townspeople, resulting in a somewhat disconcerting colorization of the environment and its inhabitants. Technically, it's a triumph of visual effects but the undercurrent of racism and eventual emergence of such time-warp comedy elements made familiar by Back To The Future and its imitators, has an entirely negative effect on proceedings. The utopian fantasy of TV soaps is revealed to be inexcusably shallow, and just as empty as the blank-paged books in Pleasantville's library.
