DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
This is Armstrong's second outting as far as film music's concerned. His first was
Romeo & Juliet, of which, as we all know, has done rather well. It actually
won him an Ivor Novello and Bafta award. Inbetween these soundtracks, he's also
responsible for The Space Between Us, a 'critically' acclaimed album. The film itself
is set in the 18th century and stars, amongst others, Robert Carlyle. It's mainly about
two highwaymen, and the music, as with all soundtracks, captures many moods and
situations. As with many soundtracks these days, it can be heard without any prior
knowledge to the film, although some of the titles may slightly mislead. However, the
one thing that deserves a special mention is the fact that all the material is new and
doesn't feature 'old' music. The only exception to this is a reworking, and yes, I said
reworking, of the Talking Heads' House In Motion. A welcome addition to the OST section
of your collection methinks. It stands up well, and delivers with no problems. review by Dave W. Hughes
