DOWSE movie guide review of Rosetta

Rosetta
Director: Luc Dardenne, Jean-Pierre Dardenne
91 minutes (15) 1999
widescreen 1.66:1
Artificial Eye
review by Gary Couzens

Rosetta was the surprise winner of the Golden Palm for Best Film at the 1999 Cannes Festival. A stark, realist drama about a young woman's search for work in a depressed part of Belgium, it shows the strong influence of the late Robert Bresson in its pared-down style (attention needs to be paid, as the film doesn't spell things out unnecessarily) making much use of handheld cameras, and use of non-professional actors. Emilie Dequenne had never acted before, but you won't forget her performance here, which won her the Best Actress prize at Cannes. Rosetta is an almost wild, stubborn and imperturbable figure, who persists in her quest, to make a 'normal life' for herself, despite considerable adversity. Her journey is a sad one, but not a hopeless one.
