She's All That
Director: Robert Iscove
92 minutes (12) FilmFour/VCI retail
review by Rob Marshall
Jodi Lyn O'Keefe (Don Johnson's cop's daughter in TV's Nash Bridges) here plays a bitchy
but beautiful student, and archrival of the formerly dowdy but bright Rachael Leigh Cook, out
acting her at every turn. Zack (Freddie Prinze, Jr) is the sports jock who takes a bet that he
can win over any girl, and turn her into prom queen. Art student Laney Boggs (Cook) is chosen
for him. Matthew Lillard (see Scream, if you must) plays the ridiculous and unlikely
Brock Hudson (I'm not kidding), who tries to seduce Laney on prom night.
This is basically just a modern dress Cinderella, with fluffy
Pygmalion highlights thrown into the American airhead mix. The acting by the leads is
extraordinarily feeble. Only lively climactic dance sequences and some offbeat performance art
make the whole thing tolerable. Even fans of hit TV show Buffy may be bored.
