Stigmata, which appeared on the silver screen late 1999, early 2000, is billed
as a modern day Exorcist and stars Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne. This,
as you may have guessed, is the soundtrack from said film. Tracks 1 to 7 are your
typical band tracks, while 8 to 18 are a collection of incidental music and film
scores. Nothing unusual there, except that tracks 7 to 18 have been penned by none
other than Billy Corgan, him out of the Smashing Pumpkins. These tracks are short
snippets from the film and as such are meant to scare, tease, haunt you (although
without seeing pictures, you don't get the same effect). They range from moody
orchestral pieces to booming techno-beat and are in fact not half bad. The first 7
tracks, though, have a fantastic and eclectic range of exclusive tracks from the like
of Chumbawumba (great techno/indie beat), Massive attack, Bjork and the scary monster
of rock himself, David Bowie! Also on board is Sinead O'Connor with the Afro Celt
Sound System (yes, it is a combination of African and Celtic sounds - drums, pipes
etc.) and with fine vocals it's a great track. The final track, penned by Corgan, is
sung exquisitely by Natalie Imbruglia and is a dark haunting ballad. This soundtrack
certainly surprised me with the strength of the first 7 tracks alone - all are
excellent in their own and varied way. As I said, the film score bits aren't that bad
either. Overall, the first 7 tracks are worth the money alone, so the rest is a bonus,
so forget the film and just buy this instead.
