DOWSE Guide to the
Movies
Curiously archaic, blackly comic British caper movie starring John Hurt as a veteran
safecracker who teams up with a pair of brash admirers to execute the perfect robbery.
Of course, it all goes laughably wrong from the moment that the thieves, disguised as
city gents, pull out their guns before the time-lock opens. Weirdly, this claims to
have been inspired by J.G. Ballard's novel 'High Rise'. Figure that one out all you
literary fans. Rhys Ifans (from Notting Hill and Rancid Aluminium)
co-stars as the leader of the smart suited but slow witted gang. Barbara Flynn is
quite good as the mysterious interrogator of heist survivor Claire Skinner, while
John Benfield plays the blustering detective assigned to break the inevitable siege
in a manner befitting his character name, Inspector Badger. The problem with You're
Dead is that writer and director Andy Hurst throws far too many leftovers into
the stew. Flashbacks to the 1970s crime and murder that saw Hurt imprisoned, wacky
red herring sequences, and the maker's entire stash diversionary tactics, combine to
make this thriller a rather confusing mess of graphic parody and easily anticipated
shock twists. Steven Hampton
