Introduction
Dowsing
can be an amazing experience. I didn't know if I could do
dowsing until I tried.it. By selecting a long forked stick
from a hazel tree and trimming it with knife I was able to
make the broad, flexible fork shape needed for dowsing.
Then it
was a matter of holding the dowsing fork correctly, not as
many of those uninitiated in dowsing might imagine, as if
it were a lawn mower perhaps. Not at all, the dowsing fork
is held with the palms facing upwards, the prongs of the firk
curved and under pressure as they sit under the fingers, rather
like the stylized image of dowsing lower down this page.
Then I
set off, walking slowly across a small wooded area in or field.
Soon I found that the dowsing fork seemed to take on a life
of its own, the point flipping up at certain places which
I noted. Upon going back over these places from different
angles with the dowsing fork held firmly in both hands I was
able to get a reaction many times, and through this process
to map out some lines that meandered across the landscape.
In fact
I found two such lines with my dowsing fork and came to the
conclusion that, since it was water I was intent on finding,
these must be the routes of underground streams. This fitted
in entirely with the fact that springs issued out of the rocky,
part-wooded hillside in other places.
To remind
me of my success I placed my dowsing fork on a windowsill
of my house, but unfortunately it was lost when we moved house.
